Dodge #4 State Park (of which I suspiciously cannot find numbers 1-3) is apparently such a popular summer spot that people are turned away after 1pm during peak season. Being such, I have avoided it like the plague. Not even because of COVID, though looking back, that was a pretty good reason. My avoidance stemmed more from my distaste for crowds, which I have passed on to my dog. And since I didn’t think it had a path/trail to walk, it didn’t seem worth a nice summer day.
So here we find ourselves. As close to the opposite of a perfect summer day. The weather is a groggy cold mist us Midwesterners grow accustomed to this time of year. A winter weather advisory on the horizon. The park practically to ourselves. I am surprised to find a trail, for it is not mentioned on the park website nor on Alltrails. Merely noted as “one mile of shoreline.” But I would call it much more than that.

Here’s to a new year. Spent doing what we love, with who we love. We ring in 2022 the best way we know how. Time spent together, outdoors, exploring the world around us.
