Cass City, MI
Some days I am my own worst enemy. Saturday night I informed Mason that we would be having an early morning. My itinerary was roughly scheduled to the half-hour. But alas, I am no morning bird, so at roughly 10am, a full 2 hours behind schedule, I finally rolled out of bed.
One hour into our drive, Mason asks if we are almost there. Life is full of disappointment though. Just over an hour later, we neared our destination. I told Mason to look for the sign. We passed it the first time.

As we hit the trail, we pass a ranger. He stops to inquire if we are just taking the nature trail or if we were interested in the tour of the petroglyphs. I quickly blurt out “just hiking” because after 1+ year of minimal human contact, I am not ready to be in close proximity of others. He gives us a quick overview of the trail.

“You’ll take a bridge over the Cass River in two places,” Quick glance at Gob “This one’s gonna wanna jump in.” We expected him to tell us not to let him. But with that, he just continued up the trail. We eventually get to the first bridge. He was right about Gob. I can’t believe he didn’t warn me about Mason though.

The trail continued through the woods, taking us to a beautiful white pine. Perhaps, the oldest white pine in the thumb area – or so says the historical marker nearby.

As we rounded the halfway point, the trail started to follow the river more closely. Gob took full advantage and hopped in every chance he got. Safe to say he was incredibly muddy by the end.

With no one in sight, we took the opportunity to sneak a peak at the petroglyphs. It was pretty neat.

Gob began to get antsy, so we thank the park ranger that offered to tell us about the petroglyphs and head on our way.
