Lake Orion, MI
We find ourselves on Gob’s last Michigan adventure. He doesn’t understand what this means and sets forth with his usual amount of energy and excitement. It’s already toasty hot, but our trail today circles a lake and is mostly in the shade of the forest. Gob takes every opportunity to cool off in the water. We spot the floating water park across the way. It looks fun, but Gob is not tall enough to play. Instead he practices being an alligator.

Despite it being a beautiful and warm summer day, there are few people at the beach. Maybe because it’s a Thursday. Once again, Gob is barred from the sandy area, so we keep our distance. The trail disappears by the parking lot, so we follow the road until we find it again.

I assume this trail is often submerged in water. Instead of grass or wildflowers, the trail is edged with reeds. I’ve never seen something like this before. And all I can think about is how in cartoons they often use these reeds as snorkles to hide in a pond. I want so badly to try it. But I resist. I don’t even pick one to try as a straw. Is this a sign of maturity? Exhaustion? Extreme will power? We may never know.
