Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park

May 11, 2022

Mackinaw City, MI

In the parking lot, we sit Gob down to go over the rules for this park. The website says that “well-behaved” dogs are allowed. So he needs to remain calm while we purchase our tickets. Our plan is to just walk the nature trails, so he doesn’t need to worry about the sawmill demonstrations or ropes course. Gob stares at us with his puppy smile, no signs of comprehension. We head in.

The park has just opened. There is one other family inside. We make a beeline for the 3-mile nature trail. It winds along a stream, and Gob wants so badly to go in. But he resists.

We split down a loop to the sugar shack giving Gob a brief relief from the lures of the stream. Also, how could we not check out something called the Sugar Shack. We learn a bit about harvesting maple sugar. Unfortunately, we find none to sample.

Back on the main trail, Gob decides he has waited long enough and makes a break for the water.

The sun evaporates any evidence of Gob’s mischief (mainly his water-logged body) before we get back to the historic section of the park. We actively avoid both the nature guide that keeps walking in our direction, as well as the wood-worker trying to show us the sawmill. I’m sure both would provide some lovely information, but I worry Gob would not be patient with their demonstrations. We stick to the outskirts, snap a few pictures, and duck out to start our journey home.
