Father Marquette National Memorial

May 9, 2022

St. Ignace, MI

Just across the bridge. A mere 15 minutes have passed since we reached the mainland (see previous post about Mackinaw Island). And I am making us stop again for yet another park. Last time I attempted this one, the entry was blocked by 5 feet of snow and a yellow blockade.

It doesn’t officially open until Memorial Day, so I’m half expecting the entry to be barricaded in some fashion. But as Mason breezes through to the parking lot, I let out an excited “yea doggy” that should have felt embarrassing.

I leave Mason at the car to stretch, but force Gob to join me on this mile-long loop to some memorial site. We start down the “interpretive nature trail” which I guess just means there are signs to educate you on trees and colonial life in the area. I mostly ignore them.

When I force Gob to take selfies with me at the bridge overlook, he gives the appropriate amount of attitude. But I am bigger than he is, so I win.

I was expecting the memorial to be a statue. I don’t know why. Instead we find a small building, much like the shelter houses found at community parks. Inside are four posters with information about Father Marquette (which I ignore), a plaque, and a map on the center of the floor. Gob sees the blue painted lakes of this map and tries to take a drink. I take this as my cue to head back to the car for some water.
