Signs warn of rattlesnakes at the trailhead. It hardly seems like the environment for them, but I’m no herpetologist. I keep my eyes and ears peeled just in case. Gob does his part by shoving his nose into every thicket of brush and hole in the ground. Even though he has just spent his energy chasing waves at the last park, he is still eager to return to the beach once he sees it in the distance. He wants to wade through the marsh. I am the bad guy because I don’t let him.

A mere 30 minutes down the coast and this beach is devoid of sand, instead covered in smooth stones. Gob is not a fan. He dips his toes and belly in the water, but otherwise sticks close. No charging the waves.

So back into the woods we go. For a very brief moment. Because we are deposited back to the lakeshore. Gob takes another opportunity to dip his toes into Lake Huron. I think we have stumbled onto the harbor that is the namesake for this park. But I forgot my trail map, so we may never know.

Gob begins to slow. And my stomach begins to rumble. And the clouds rolling in are making the temperature drop. So we cut our hike short, sticking to the trails labeled “good” on the map and not taking a chance on the ones described as “overgrown”, “bushy”, or “seasonally wet”. Which means we missed the shipwreck. Maybe. If you can see it from shore. Which we may never know. Unless we go back to check.
