Clear Lake State Park

April 29, 2022

Atlanta, MI

Today I begin my third attempt at what I call “the pointer finger loop.” Weather has deterred me twice before, but not today. There is sunshine. So I ignore the fact that it dipped below freezing last night. And the fact that it will be near freezing every night this week. Sunshine and a minimal chance of precipitation means that I can brave the cold.

We arrive at the lake. The clarity lives up to its name. Gob takes a quick dip, but is eager to hit the trail. We’re in elk country, and I think he picked up a good sniff.

We start in the woods. The ground is surprisingly sandy for as far inland as we are. The late day sun filters through the trees, beams and shadows adding lines and dimension to the forest.

We exit the forest into a field of new pines. They are short enough that the sun can reach my pale skin unfettered. I soak up as much as I can while Gob hops through the underbrush, shoving his nose in every bundle of leaves in search of critters. He finds none. And then we are back in the woods.

When we get back to the border of the lake, Gob takes the first opportunity to go for a dip. I guess our walk warmed him up.

Back at the car, we settle in for the night. Tomorrow brings the promise of more adventures. But unfortunately no elk sightings.
