Wetzel State Recreation Area

April 26, 2022

Marine City, MI

It feels like it has been raining every day for the past month. I guess that’s April showers for you. And I would say “at least it’s not snowing” but it’s still only 45 degrees outside. And there is no sun. Just a solid sheet of grey cloud covering the sky that I think is still blue but I’m honestly not sure anymore. All that to say it feels much colder than 45 degrees. So I am still wearing my winter coat. Against my will.

And with all of this rain, or course, comes flooded trails. At first it’s just a small puddle here and there. Easily avoidable. Or shallow enough to splash through without a thought. But as we reach the far end of the loop, the puddles are so deep they completely cover my shoes. The cold water spills into my shoe from the top, completely circumventing the waterproof features that have kept me dry thus far.

At the beginning, I decide that we were going to run the trail today. To get out of the cold. To get it over with faster. So that I don’t have to go run later for my half-marathon training. Mostly because Gob will love it, and it’s been a long time since I’ve run with him.

He does great. And has so much fun splashing about. And is quite tired at the end.
