Outdoor Adventure Center

April 2, 2022

Detroit, MI

In just two days, I will no longer be a twenty-something. In celebration of my birthday weekend, I drag my husband to the Outdoor Adventure Center in Detroit with the promise that we will eat delicious food after. He does not know what he’s in for. He does not know it is a hands-on-museum of adventure. Definitely geared towards children. And he realizes this only as we are walking up to the building. The only adults without any children running about their feet.

We have a science museum in my hometown that is similar, just not outdoor focused. And I have been as an adult many times and not felt out of place. But here, today, I felt slightly out of place. But I lived my penultimate day as a twenty-something with vigor. I flapped my arms as the VR bald eagle, soaring over the rivers and lakes. I poked all of the mechanical frogs to make them croak in chorus. And you can bet your bottom that I tried my hand at shooting prairie dogs in the arcade-style game. And you can rest assured that I beat Mason in both accuracy and number of kills.

A fun time was had by at least one. I did a poor job of photographing my experience, mostly because I couldn’t avoid the children running amok. I still prefer the actual outdoors to the simulated one.
