Leelanau State Park

January 21, 2022

Northport, MI

Is it weird that I prefer lighthouses covered in snow? Especially when they’re still decorated for the holidays. An added bonus: always fewer people in the cold.

The frozen lakeshore is constantly changing as we move up the coast. Contrary to what I expect, it is somehow less frozen than earlier stops. Waves can be seen frozen in motion. Icicles form like a cage over rocks.

We depart from our lighthouse in search of a trail. A gnome marks the entrance to a cedar grove, which opens into a pine forest, then drops us into sand dunes and the lakeshore. Which is, of course, also frozen.

Our hike is complete. We opt to drive a bit further rather than wait out the sunset. We end up in Leeland, just a bit south on the Lake Michigan shoreline. What starts as a rather unremarkable sunset ends with a burst of color erupting behind the distant sand dunes of Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore.
