Point Abbaye

October 1-2, 2021

L’Anse, MI

I attempted this vista/campsite once before. But a surprise snowstorm turned the unimproved gravel road into an impassable mess of puddles, slush, and ice. For this reason, I am nervous about the rain that has started as I reach the start of my drive. Thankfully, the road looks great. We make it to our campsite just as the storm begins.

We sit in the car until the thunder stops, then head into the drizzle for some exploration. The rain soon stops, and we are brave enough to explore the shore. The waves are still rowdy. Gob does his best to corral them, running up and down the coast, barking and nipping at the breaks. But it has no effect. The clouds mute the sunset, but we sit and enjoy it nonetheless.

As morning comes, we are eager to start our day. A quick hello to the still muted sunrise, and we bid adieu to our campsite.

It’s a short drive to the Point Abbaye “trailhead”. The air smells of cedar and blackberries. Only a few miles from where we camped, but the shoreline is entirely different. The smooth stones and pebbles have been replaced by staggering slabs of black rock that look like frozen lava flows. Gob is immediately back to corralling the waves. The sun peaks over the clouds, giving us the colorful sunrise I was hoping for.
