Wilson State Park

Harrison, MI

I love a good night drive. The road is empty. No construction traffic. No cars swerving around trying to get one cars length ahead. No side by side semi trucks holding everyone up for miles on end. Just the occasional fellow night traveler whisking by. Sure there are some negatives. Too bright headlights that shine directly in your eyes. The general fear that a deer could jump into your path at any moment and you wont see it until it’s too late.

But there’s something about the pitch black sky and how it melts into the pitch black road. And as I drive up a hill, it looks like I’m driving straight into the big dipper. I imagine this is the closest I will ever come to space travel.

I much prefer this to the early mornings. Sure you get some beautiful sunrises. But eventually the light shines directly in your still tired eyes in an attempt to blind you. It illuminates the tens, hundreds, or thousands of miles you have yet to travel. Sometimes veiled in a heavy fog. And like the groundhog from his hole emerge the construction crews and commuters. Forever behind schedule.

I hate everything about morning drives. Except for the coffee.

So here’s to slow mornings enjoying coffee by the lake. Waiting patiently as the fog burns off and the sun reaches new heights. Not that I ever do that. But it does sound nice.
