September 10-11, 201
Marenisco, MI
Gob is going to like this campsite. I know this as soon as I pull into our spot, which is perched right on the edge of a beautiful lake. The couple camping next door also has a dog. They say hello, then Gob goes to explore his lake. I don’t let him enjoy it nearly long enough before pulling him away for our 2.75 mile hike. But daylight is fading. He can explore camp later.

We cross the street and enter the forest. The evening sun dances through the leaves, twinkling against the trail. The yellowing beech leaves and browning ferns are the only signs that autumn is approaching. The woods are still lush and green, full of summer’s energy.

Back at camp, we dip our toes in the lake and enjoy the sunset. Gob decides he has had enough water for the day and sits in the grass while I continue snapping pictures. When the sun disappears, we retreat to the van and snuggle up with a book.

We wake up just before sunrise. I am comfortable and really don’t want to get up quite yet. But I glimpse the cotton candy colors peaking over the lake and decide I must do it for the gram.
