Bass River Rec Area

September 6, 2021

Lamont, MI

We leave camp early, and I make a much needed pit stop for coffee and a scone. I am having trouble finding this park. I guess technically it’s a rec area. But I digress. I see none of the brown road signs that typically help point me in the right direction. Eventually I find myself on an “improved” dirt road. And am driving aimlessly looking for my trailhead. I see no signs, but eventually find a parking area for unloading horses…I figure I can unload my dog here too. I tie him to a hitching post as I finish my coffee, collect my camera, and put on my shoes.

Our trail is actually a mountain biking trail. I am hopeful that our early start on a holiday will keep our trail empty. Gob is not particularly fond of bicycles.

I am noticing for the first time the beginnings of fall. The grasses are yellowing, the ferns are turning a golden brown, and the beech leaves are loosing their green. I am filled with excitement for another midwestern fall, and also despair over the end of summer. Where has the time gone?

Our hike was lovely and lonely. We saw only two cyclists towards the end.
