Muskegon, MI
Now caffeinated and breakfasted, we are ready for our second hike of the day. Gob is excited for the promise of another dip in Lake Michigan. We are both nervous to be back among the dunes. But thankfully these are much nicer on my calves.

As we make it to the shoreline, Gob sprints straight into the waves. He is immediately startled by how large they are today. And he decides he is not a fan after taking a wave straight to the face. He stays at the very edge of where the tides reach, letting just his toes enjoy the cool water. But all good things must come to an end, and we are soon back in the dune forest, and eventually back at the car. Where Gob convinces me he deserves lunch.

Apparently lunch and a 5 minute drive are enough to put Gob into a food coma. He refuses to get out of van-bed at our next trailhead. Promises of another dip in Lake Michigan make no headway. I give in and let him sleep for 10 minutes. Then finally, he is ready to go.

A short mile and a quarter through the dune forest (which I will say is a deceptive distance for a trail named the “Walk-a-mile” trail…), and we are back at the lakeshore. This side is much more crowded. Gob tries once again to wet his feet, but the waves keep him back. We weave through the crowd of people littering the half mile of beach back to the car. He spots a seagull and chases it straight into the surf. Now soaked, he happily trots up the path off the beach, and hops straight into the car. He is almost immediately back asleep. It’s not even 2pm.
