Duck Lake State Park

September 4, 2021

Whitehall, MI

It’s been overcast and drizzly all day. I almost prefer this because Gob stays cooler and it keeps crowds at bay.

We start our visit at the unofficial swim beach. The boardwalk tunnel that leads us there is flooded. Gob is in heaven. I am thankful for my waterproof running shoes. As soon as we step foot onto the beach, it is clear that Gob will not be content merely splashing at the shoreline. I remove my shoes and hike my leggings over my knees. It was a wasted effort. No sooner had I told Gob I was ready than I found myself waist deep in Lake Michigan. The sudden drop off caught us both by surprise. But Gob was like a little kid. Hopping into the waves and running straight into the drop off over and over as he splashed and played.

Eventually I brought his splashing to an end. I dropped my shoes off at the car. And we completed our 3 mile hike barefoot. It was a simple path. But it was a peaceful and lovely end to our morning.
