Cheboygan State Park

Cheboygan, MI

Hey, it’s Che-boy-again. Our last minute addition to the itinerary.

We abruptly turned into the park as we approached. A snoozing Gob is startled awake by the change in direction. As we approach the trail head parking lot, he appears unconvinced that another hike is necessary. I roll his window down, and he catches some new sniffs. He is convinced.

Our trail starts in the woods. Gob enjoys the cold snow on his tired paws. We take the fork towards the beach.

Gob immediately starts for the water, expecting an ice bath for his aching muscles. Alas, it is still frozen. He opts for a snow roll instead. I let him take his time.

A distant lighthouse dots the horizon. Behind it, we can just make out the arches of the Mackinaw bridge. I desperately try to snap a picture that shows both, but the bridge is too faint. I regret not bringing my telephoto lens.

Eventually the beach transitions to the forest. Gob pounces through the tall grass, forever one to stick his nose where it doesn’t belong. Tall grass gives way to taller trees. The sandy trail turns back to snow. As we arrive back at the car, my once energetic dog has had enough. I open the van door and tell him to get in. He lifts one paw up, then looks to me with pleading eyes. I lift him the rest of the way and promise this is the last hike of the trip. In an instant, he is asleep.
