Proud Lake Rec Area

1/24/2021

Commerce Township, MI

Snowflakes glitter to the ground as the sunlight hits, barely peaking through the grey clouds above. Gob hops out of the car, immune to the tiny snowballs growing between his toes. Meanwhile I am so bundled up that only the skin around my eyes is being kissed by the cold. It only takes a few steps for me to realize the layer of snow is masking a layer of ice. I slip on my Yaktrax, tie Gob to my waist, and finally we hit the trail.

Ever a sucker for boardwalks, this park is winning me over fast. Gob works on his runway walk. I think he’s nailing it.

We depart from the Marsh Trail, where already 3 groups of people have ogled my Yaktrax. Soon we have crossed over the river and are winding our way through the woods. Over 5 miles hiked, and we are finally back to the car.

I may curse the snow in the moment. Cold. Wet. Slippery. But I cannot deny the magical quality it lends to pictures. Nor the joy that it brings by dog.
